United Church of Christ East Goshen

Open and Affirming Statement

Adopted January 22, 2006

Preamble

In its 2004 Strategic Plan, the Congregation of the United Church of Christ East Goshen set forth its vision for the future. Seven key goals were established. In the fourth goal we stated: “we have clarified our philosophy by completing an open and affirming study.” Now, having experienced Bible study, congregational dialogue, personal testimony and prayer, we the members of the United Church of Christ East Goshen have reached a consensus that we are empowered to welcome the stranger in our midst regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or any category historically used to separate people from one another.

Our Open and Affirming Statement

We, the United Church of Christ East Goshen, declare ourselves to be an open and

affirming congregation. We believe with Christ “there is no longer Jew or Greek, there is

no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in

Christ Jesus,”1 and are called to live our vision “living in God’s love together.” Being led

by the Holy Spirit and the teachings and example of Jesus Christ, we commit ourselves

to being inclusive. We extend our welcome to persons of every race; ethnicity; age;

gender; sexual orientation including gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons;

physical or mental ability; economic or marital status; and faith background. Call and

employment practices will also reflect our dedication to inclusiveness. We affirm our

commitment by extending the rights, privileges, sacraments, duties, and obligations of

church membership to all.

Our congregation celebrates the diversity of God’s people, each with gifts to share. We

call upon our members to be a community in covenant with one another, sharing the

good news of God’s love. We embrace all of God’s people and will work to end

injustice, inequality, oppression and discrimination. Led by the Holy Spirit we pray that

we will exemplify Christian faith in our community as we welcome all into the wholeness

of God’s love.
